I make sculptures whenever I have access to the materials. Some of these where made in my home studio, while others where created in shared ceramics spaces. The materials used in these pieces vary. Some are created entirely of clay while others are cardboard and cut wood. I love making large scale sculptures and plan to do more as I get the time and materials.
Dice Tower
This is a functional sculpture created to help a game player roll dice in a contained space. The structure is build with a base of cardboard with a layer of hand cut wood attached with glue and terracotta clay. I then painted the whole structure and decorated it with moss and fake plants. All of the miniatures found on this sculpture were gathered over time and secured with glue. The way this tower functions is by the user putting a die into the top tunnel. The die then falls down a spiral staircase constructed on the inside of the tower, and then falls out of the front door at the bottom of the structure.
House Goblins
These little figures where made out of oven bake clay in my home studio as a small passion project. While making these figures I created a story for them. I see these creatures as blessings met to be gifted to a household. When they are displayed in the home they watch over the residence protecting them from harm. Each of these figures have been sold already and have found happy homes to watch over.
Dice Jail
This is another functional structure I built out of cardboard, cut wood, and terracotta clay. I constructed this model to act as a "Dice Jail" during games like Dungeons and Dragons. In Dnd all of your characters actions are determined by dice rolls, and sometimes the dice are not kind to the players. If a die rolls low for two long it is banished to the dice jail. The player can throw their dice down the well in the middle of the model that leads to the large chamber in the base. When a player wants to retrieve their die they need only to open a small hatch at the back of the model that allows access to the inside.
Lunar Rabbit
This is a small sculpture I made for an art class in college. The inspiration was the current lunar new year, as it was the year of the rabbit. This sculpture is constructed entirely of cardboard and was painted with black ink, acrylic paint and watercolors. The sketches feature in this sections show a bit of my process of designing this piece. I was the most indecisive about the clouds and how they were going to look, but I am happy with the style I landed on.
Clay Vase
This is a large clay vase that I created in Western Washingtons shared pottery studio. I created this piece by using the coil method and used Scoring to create the patterns. This vase is inspired by a calm lake scene. The images around the sides feature ducks, frogs, birds, and even bones at the base to represent the earth under the lake. The most challenging part of this piece was making and attaching the three symmetrical handles, but I am pretty proud of the result.
